—Jimmy Wales, Founder of Wikipedia

THE NAME WIKIPEDIA IS MADE UP FROM TWO WORDS: WIKI, THAT IN HAWAIIAN MEANS 'QUICK'
AND GREEK ORIGIN ENCYCLOPEDIA.

STATISTICS
22 MLN  ACCOUNTS
78 000 ACTIVE EDITORS
ALMOST 500 MLN  MONTHLY VISITORS
18 MLN PAGE VIEW  (FEB. 2014)
THERE ARE 200 WIKIPEDIAS, BUT ENGLISH WIKIPEDIA REMAINS THE LARGEST
WITH 4.6 MLN ARTICLES, THAT IS 30 TIMES MORE THAN BRITANNICA HAS.
ENGLISH WIKIPEDIA IS ADDING 800 NEW ARTICLES DAILY.
DUE TO VANDALISM 1,000 PAGES DAILY ARE BEING DELETED.
IT IS THE 6TH MOST USED WEBSITE
Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia, written collaboratively by the people who use it. It is a special type of website designed to make collaboration easy allows people to add, modify, or delete content in collaboration with others.
One of the great pluses and advantage that Wiki holds in comparison with regular
Encyclopedia is easy way to update and to keep information current.  However, there were in the past (due to vandalism) accusations of inaccuracy . as a result in 2005  "Nature" conducted test on science site, with the conclusion, that Wiki accuracy is about the same as Britannica.

A LITTLE MORE STATISTICAL COMPARISON AS TO THE SIZE OF WIKIPEDIA.

ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA HAS 32 VOLUMES
                                                                   =44 MLN WORDS
                                                                   =1,980 VOLUMES FOR WP
                                                                   = 2 SHELVES OF VOLUMES

CURRENTLY,  2,048.7 VOLUMES OF ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA
= TEXT (WITHOUT IMAGES) OF ENGLISH WIKIPEDIA.
SUCH AN SIZE IS VERY HARD EVEN TO IMAGINE.
